Lighting Tips
One of my favorite departments in my local home improvement store is the electrical department. I would say that is mainly because of all of the wonderful and useful products they carry to enhance the beauty and functionality of the lighting through out my home. Here are some of the tips I have used while decorating my own home.
Wall Switch Plate Covers
Lighting fixtures can be like the jewelry that embellishes your home. They add sparkle,interest, and your eye is naturally drawn towards them. Besides being functional, a special fixture can be part of the decor style you choose for the space. The same can be said for the wall and switch plate covers you choose for each room. Like the trim that lines your windows and doors through out your home, the wall and switch plates generally match from room to room. That does not need to be the case. Don't be afraid to make a statement and carry your decorating style on to your wall plates. If you haven't already discovered, wall and switch plate covers come in an amazing array of colors,decor styles and themes including :

Lampshade Care and Cleaning
The care and cleaning of a lampshade is totally dependent upon the individual makeup and materials used in the shade.
All lampshades
* First and foremost, follow the lampshade manufacturers recommendations for the care and cleaning of the shade you purchase. They may include some of the following:
* Keep out of direct sunlight.(Sunlight deteriorates fabric and fades colors.)
* Keep out of extreme conditions.(heat,cold,moisture,dirt)
* Use only the wattage light bulb recommended by the shade manufacturer,(or less wattage) to protect your shade from scorching, burning or prematurely deteriorating from the heat of the bulb.
* Dust with feather duster to clean.
* Clean carefully around any decorative embellishments as to not tear, damage, or break them off.
Silk lampshades
* Keep out of direct sunlight.
* keep out of extreme conditions.
* Use only the wattage light bulb recommended by the shade manufacturer.
* Dust with a feather duster or Dry-Clean lampshade sponge to clean. Some,( not all ) silk lampshades can be hand washed, but we do not recommend it since you can end up with water and rust spots if not done correctly.
* Work gently around special detail when cleaning a lampshade with decorative embellishments so you don't tear, damage, or break them off.
Paper lampshades
* Keep colored shades out of direct sunlight.
* Keep shade out of extreme conditions.
* Use only the wattage light bulb recommended by the shade manufacturer.
* Dust with a feather duster or Dry-Clean lampshade sponge to clean. Coated shades can be cleaned with a damp cloth, but be careful not to press too hard as to damage any detail or remove the protective coating.
* Clean carefully around decorative embellishments or detail so you don't tear, damage, or break them off.
Dry Clean lampshade sponges come in a few different styles and are available at your local hardware and home improvement centers for under five dollars. They are also available via the internet.

Lampshade Sizing
* Measure top diameter A-B
* Measure bottom diameter G-H
* Measure vertical height E-F
* Measure diagonal height C-D
To maintain the same look and feel of your original lampshade, choose a shade with dimensions as close to the original shade as possible. If you want to change the look of your overall lamp, experiment with different shapes, sizes and colors of shades. As a general rule, a lampshade should be at least a few inches shorter than the lamp base and the bottom of the shade should sit just below the base of the socket at eye level.
